Children move into Key Stage 1 at the end of their Reception year and spend a year in Year 1 (aged 5 turning 6) and a year in Year 2 (aged 6 turning 7) before moving on to Key Stage 2.
The school day runs from 8.30am to 3.20pm. The Key Stage 1 curriculum includes the following subjects:
The curriculum is approached partly through topics, which are carefully rotated and linked to Foundation Stage topics, to avoid repetition. Examples of topics include:
The curriculum is enhanced by an extensive programme of trips and visiting speakers. Key Stage 1 children perform a nativity at Christmas and take part in the whole school Carol Service. They also take a class assembly each term. Games and music are taught by specialist teachers. Swimming is a weekly activity and there is an increased choice of extra-curricular activities, mainly offered at lunchtime.
The Reading Buddy system continues throughout the school and the children forge strong friendships across year groups, which are further enhanced by the House system. We have 3 Houses—Brunel, Cabot and Hannah More—and all children are allocated a House as they start in Nursery. Competitions take place throughout the year, including Sports Day in the summer term.
